Abstract
With worldwide adoption of modern anti-tuberculous treatment, the number of aged
patient with advanced tuberculosis lesion has grown. Consequently, many papers
appeared describing coexistent pulmonary tuberculosis and carcinoma of the lung with
emphasis on clinical picture and the diagnostic difficulty. In the presence of proved
tuberculosis, coexisting carcinoma is apt to be unrecognized until it has advanced
beyond resectability.
This 58 year-old man was admitted to the Severance Hospital because of weight loss
and general weakness for 2 months. He had experienced pulmonary tuberculosis 30
years ago. Twenty months before the admission he was diagnosed as active pulmonary
tuberculosis by chest X-ray and sputum culture. Initially he had responded excellently to
antituberculosis chemotherapy. But 2 months before the admission there was extension
of presumed tuberculous shadowing on chest X-ray. Flexible bronchoscopic examination
and biopsy revealed epidermoid carcinoma.
